This website showcases the work of longstanding artist and illustrator Christina Brodie. Art on this site will be either previously unseen for the most part, or created from 2025 onwards. This is a place where users have a glimpse into the story behind the artist, and her creative process.

*************************************

I have been drawing my whole life; I decided that I was going to become an artist at age 10, and was particularly fascinated by natural history. Growing up in a Victorian mansion surrounded by 4 1/2 acres of grounds - a piece of traditional England - I was a child who never ceased to be entranced by the magic of nature. I grew up on the books of author-illustrators such as Cicely Mary Barker, Beatrix Potter, Hugh Lofting, Arthur Ransome and Wilhelm Busch; and the work of German draughtsman Hans Witzig and Russian painter Ivan Shishkin

My work has mainly tended towards realism, and this type of work is what is featured on this site. Nevertheless, I have experimented with other drawing and painting styles over the years, and this work is covered on my other sites (see below).

I enjoy working in a sketchy style, as well as producing highly detailed work. I love the energy and spontaneity of a sketchbook page, and am never happier than when I am outside in nature, drawing from life.

This site showcases work of mine covering the following subject areas: â€‹Botany; Other natural history;

Architecture and landscape.

I'm interested in projects which centre around ecology, the environment, conservation and sustainability: for example, a series of illustrations of sweetcorn I made for Honda to illlustrate the recycling of cornhusk fibre into car seat material.

As a botanical and natural history artist, I'm conversant with field trips and the recording and cataloguing of species. The subject of plants in the landscape and built environment is a favourite of mine; I studied horticulture and landscape design at Cannington College.

I enjoy researching the geology of environments I visit, as it gives me a flavour of the structures underpinning the local ecosystem; what's below ground influences everything above ground!

Sustainability naturally extends to everyday products such as cosmetics and perfumes. I graduated in textiles and fashion, and the patterns of nature, repeated at whatever scale, never cease to fascinate me; they deserve to be translated into designs! â€‹

In an ideal world, I'd like to be one of those artists who never stopped drawing or painting, and was forever with a brush, pencil or pen in their hand!
